CANCELLED: Forms of Forgetting
Unfortunately we have to cancel the workshop on forgetting with Professor Aleida Assmann (Universität Konstanz) November 2 2017.
Is forgetting a topic just like any other topic? How can we speak about something that is defined mainly in terms of negation, absence or blocked access? When in 1988 Umberto Eco probed the potential of this theme and asked whether there is such a thing as an art or theory of forgetting, his answer was quick and clear: ‚Forget it!’ In spite of his dismissal of the topic, Assmann will take up the question again and start with a simple proposition: Let us not forget that what we call ‚memory’ is a general term covering both remembering and forgetting. As forgetting is not only the adversary but also the accomplice of remembering, the two terms are intrinsically related and not easy to disentangle. In the lecture Assmann will discuss examples of individual, social and political practices of forgetting in their historical contexts. An important aspect will be the structural change in remembering and forgetting due to the new conditions of digital media.
The following discussion will be on the lecture and on Assmann's chapter 'Cultural and Political Frames of Forgetting', in Hartmut von Sass and Johannes Zachhuber (eds) Forgiving and Forgetting, Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2015, pp. 19-34.
If you want a copy of the chapter please contact coordinator of the research program Anne Brædder: anne.braedder@cas.au.dk
