We have invited two interesting speakers. Prof. dr. Ann Rigney who recently has received a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant with the project "Remembering Activism: The Cultural Memory of Protest in Europe" will give a talk on her new project. As 2018 is the 50th anniversary for the student revolts in 1968, we have also invited the cartoonist and author Ivar Gjørup who witnessed 1968 at Aarhus University. He will share his memories of protest and hope in 1968.

Cartoonist and author today, former editor of the Students' Council Magazine at Aarhus University. He will share his memories from the students’ revolution of 1968 – a few of them!

14:30: Prof. dr. Ann Rigney, Utrecht University: Remembering Activism: studying the cultural memory of protest

Memory studies, since it developed in the 1980s, has focused on the traumatic and on the legacy of war. In her talk, Rigney will place the concept of hope at the center of analysis and highlight alternative traditions of commemoration related to civil disobedience and protest. Calling upon a range of different examples, Rigney will map a new area of research that relates memory to activism and offers tools for capturing the cultural transmission of hope and the collective attachment to rights and values even in face of defeat.
